War Brides (closed)

This exhibit was opened November 10, 2006 in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the war brides of Canada. It traces the War Bride experience from meeting Canadians overseas and falling in love to the marriages that followed, the trans-Atlantic journey and their adaptation to life in New Brunswick. The York Sunbury Museum is grateful for the assistance of Melynda Jarratt who guest curated the exhibit.

Ms. Jarrett is a New Brunswick historian specialising in the War Brides experience and has written 3 books on the subject. Her most recent book, Captured Hearts: New Brunswick's War Brides, is available for purchase at the museum.

Between 1942 and 1948, a total of 43, 454 War Brides and 20, 997 children were brought to Canada from Britain and Europe. The majority arrived in 1946 on special War Bride ships that docked at Halifax's Pier 21. Of these, an estimated 3000 War Brides and their children came to New Brunswick.
