Recent Research Enquiries

We receive several reseach enquiries every year and though we are a small organization we do our best to help out. We have started to post several of the questions on our blog in the hopes that someone who can answer it stumbles on on it as they surf the web.

Here are some of our recent ones:

I am wondering if the York Sunbury Historical Society could recommend an expert in local Fredericton history for paid research, including archival research. Do you have a list of historians that might be available to do paid research? Thank you in advance for any assistance or suggestions.

“I am researching the fifth Lord Lansdowne. On 23 October 1884 he made a visit to a collection of factories 2 1/2 miles from Fredericton. These, a village and a church were established by a self made man from the province of New Brunswick. He owned 200,000 acres of woodland. I would be grateful if you could let me know what was his name.”

“I am looking for information on a small circus menagerie that spent several days in Fredericton mid July or so in 1836. It was supposed to be there 13-16 July but perhaps it was later due to delays. It was coming from St. John, Gagetown and Oromocto. Specifically, I am seeking information on the types of animals, the acts performed, what was in the omnibus and details on some wax figures. All this is for a book on the burning of the “Royal Tar” steamship which was carrying this menagerie back to Portland from St. John with the loss of the animals and 32 passengers. I have no need for any information on the actual disaster! I am having difficulty ascertaining information on the vessel itself as to construction details, steam engine manufacturer, and so on. She was built in Carleton and launched on 5 November 1835. I paid a visit to the St. John library last month and searched newspaper accounts for that period and only came upon a mention of the launch date. Any information in this area would also be appreciated.”

“I was wondering if you would know of any information concerning the old railway roundhouse that is now the Craig Electric building on Union St. & if there might be pictures of it when it was the roundhouse? Also, the roundhouse I remember I believe was located in what is now the Devon Lumber yard, is there any information or are there any photos of this? Thank you”

If you have a research query then please fill out the form on our contact page and we will do what we can and include it on our blog.

If you think you can help out with one of the above inquiries then leave a comment on our blog. Thanks!
