Describe work tasks and responsibilities:
Guided by the Exhibits Plan, the Curator of Exhibitions Officer would work with the Manager, the Exhibits Committee and volunteer Curators. The Curator of Exhibitions Officer will assist with the organization of special exhibitions, temporary and permanent exhibitions, exhibit related projects as well as collaborate with research and artefact selection. There are 3 exhibits planned for this year and 2 exhibit related projects. Completion of the exhibits planned for the upcoming year including a permanent exhibit pertaining to the Acadians in Fredericton, an exhibit about the evolution of medical care in central New Brunswick, and an exhibit that features little known stories about the Historic Garrison and environs of Fredericton. The two exhibit related projects are a brochure and a children’s colouring book based on Acadian history.

Assists with web promotion as well as other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

The YSM is open 7 days a week during the summer and students are expected to be available to work days, week ends and evenings.

Describe how the student will be supervised and by whom. Also, describe any mentoring plan:
The Curator of Exhibitions Officer will work under the daily supervision of the Museum and Society Executive Director and Curators as well as receive guidance from the volunteer Exhibits Committee of the Society, who are comprised of local professional workers from both government and the private sector, historians, researchers and university professors. The selected candidate will work with the curators, Executive Director and Collections Committee to select objects for the exhibit. Research and locate potential videos, audio and image assets, assist exhibit with text writing as needed in developing exhibit script and web content, conduct research as needed to gain working knowledge of exhibit subjects, develop a professional working relationship with team members, including museum partners, collaborators and sponsors, assist with presentation of data or visuals as needed for promotional purposes and assist with exhibit opening plans. The selected candidate will receive 10 days collections and history orientation at the start of their employment. This time will be divided between the different curators of the exhibits and orientation with the Museum's collection. The summer employee will acquire knowledge of central New Brunswick cultural history, knowledge of established methods and techniques of historical research in collection evaluation, analysis or presentation of historical facts, knowledge of research sources, primary source research and analytical skills, teamwork skills, skill in managing collaborative undertakings and partnership among organizations, multi-tasking skills, communication skills (oral and written), budgeting skills, website, evaluation skills, problem solving skills, organizing skills and project management skills.

Describe your plan to ensure that the student is aware of good health and safety practices in the workplace:
York Sunbury Museum employees are given an orientation session with areas of training covered that include but are not limited to: - Emergency/Non Emergency Numbers - Safety and Accident Rules - Substance Abuse - Smoking - Work Hours and Break Entitlement - Dealing with Problem Issues - Safe Handling of Artefacts and Equipment (with emphasis on safety, care and due diligence). The York Sunbury Museum recently wrote an Emergency Plan that all employees will be required to review and understand.

Briefly name the fields of studies from which you intend to hire a student and describe how the fields relate to the job:
The selected candidate should be a Bachelor of Arts in History or Museum Studies student. Knowledge and experience in New Brunswick history and/or Acadian history preferred. Bilingualism (French/English) preferred. This position would give the selected candidate work experience in a history/museum related field, with transferrable skills work experience such as research, writing and project management tasks. It is an ideal position for students considering a career in museums, cultural development and historical preservation or in an archives.

Candidate Profile
A minimum first year university student (preferably history), must have excellent communication and organizational skills, be flexible, able to multi-task and have the ability to work in a fast-pace environment. Candidate should be outgoing, enjoy history and able to build good working relationships with a variety of people.
