2009 YSM EdVentures Workshops
The workshops are planned for the July and August 2009 through the City of Fredericton EdVentures Program. The details are still being worked out but below is the basic outline for each workshop that we are offering.
Built Heritage – July 18 and 19, 2009

Length: 2-days
Offered by: York-Sunbury Historical Society & Museum/NBCCD
Limit: 15 participants
Workshop Fee: $140 (plus HST)
Materials Fee: $10
Saturday:
9-12pm: History and uses of the 1850’s British Colonial Military Officer’s Quarters building, which was also home of the first permanent Canadian Army and now a 10,000 square foot community museum. This would include tours and interactive presentations. You will have an appreciation of 19th century British Colonial Military building design and construction.
Break for lunch
1:30-4:30pm: Walking tour of the downtown Fredericton Historic Garrison District with talks and discussions on the history of various buildings. This will provide an opportunity to acquire insight into the history of the military presence in Fredericton.
Sunday:
9-12pm: “House” story slide show presentation of 19th and 20th century Fredericton homes and significant local builders. Discussion on building patterns and architectural housing styles. Experience the foundation and evolution of a community through its housing development. Learn about the Town Plat, Rabbit Town, Salamanca, Brick Hill, White Chapel, Maryland Hill etc.
Break for lunch
1:30-4:30pm: Walking tour of Fredericton’s Town Plat with oral presentations and discussions on a full range of architectural topics. Learn to recognize 19th and 20th century architectural styles, ornamental detailing, doors, windows, and exterior work in addition to the building construction history of Fredericton. This information will make touring New Brunswick’s communities richer and more interesting.
Summary Statement:
A window to the past. If these walls could talk, what stories would they tell? Buildings hold the key to discovering a community’s growth and development from the ground up. In this workshop, participants will explore Fredericton’s built heritage through an interactive examination of local houses and military buildings. Become familiar with building design and style elements before touring the Town Plat, populated by significant 19th and 20th Century buildings. Take a walk in time to build an appreciation for the architectural details of local buildings, while reconstructing the very foundation of Fredericton’s history.
Loyalist History – August 1 and 2, 2009

Saturday and Sunday:
9-12pm and 1:30-4:30pm: Introducing Fredericton’s direct connection to the American Revolutionary War, the migration of these Loyalists from Maryland and the New England states through viewing an interactive Loyalist exhibit, a movie, recently published material, leading authorities in the field, and period museum collection artefacts. The experience will include the Changing of the Guard ceremony, a walking tour of a variety of Loyalist era sites. You will gain a thorough understanding of the impact of Loyalist migration on Fredericton and New Brunswick.

Ever wonder how an exiled people, who lived in tents their first winter in an unforgiving wilderness, quickly went on to establish a community, a military stronghold, and a university? Enter the world of the Loyalists in this interactive and dynamic workshop. The personal stories of soldier and civilian alike will bring the incredible journey of the Loyalists to life. Explore the full impact of the Loyalist migration on both Fredericton and New Brunswick to discover the consequences and rewards of Loyalty.
Fredericton’s Acadian History & Culture – August 15 and 16, 2009

Saturday:
9-12pm and 1:30-4:30pm: Introducing Central New Brunswick’s connections to its Acadian past through the museum’s Acadian exhibit, a movie, guest speakers who are leading authorities in the field, and period museum collection artefacts. The experience will include a walking tour of several Acadian locations.
Sunday:
9-12pm and 1:30-4:30pm: An exploration of Acadian culture, music, food, flag, politics and politicians, literature, and the Church. You will gain a modern perspective on the revival of Acadian culture.
12-1:30: Acadian inspired lunch with entertainment (provided)
Summary Statement:
An Enduring Cultural Presence. Did you realize that the Acadian presence in what would become Fredericton stretches back several centuries? Explore the complex history of the Acadian people, from their settlement at St. Anne, the Expulsion, to the survival and revival of their rich cultural heritage. This lively, entertaining, and informative workshop will expose participants to the Acadian experience, their stories of struggle, and their enduring cultural presence.
