Group Tours & Programs
The York Sunbury Museum offers guided tours and special programs for students of all grade levels, pre-school through university including daycares, ELP Programs, Cadets, Girl Guides and Scouts. Museum staff and volunteers engage students in active looking and discussion as they explore the Museum’s varied collection and exhibitions.
Planning Your Tour
Please refer to the information below when planning your tour.
Tour Availability
Tours may be scheduled Monday to Friday from 9am to 8pm, but must be booked at least two weeks in advance.
Group Size
The maximum number of students for a school group is 100. We require one chaperone for every 10 students. Groups are usually divided into smaller groups because the galleries in our building are small. For example, a group of 100 students would be divided into 4 groups that would tour at the same time but start in different galleries.
Cost
Students are charged $1 each and teachers/chaperones receive free admission to the Museum. We recommend one adult per 10 students. Payment options and exact costs are discussed when making your reservation and will vary depending on the additional activities you choose.
Scheduling a Tour
Tours must be requested at least two weeks in advance. Fill out the pre-registration form to begin the scheduling process. A member of the Museum staff will contact you after you fill out the pre-registration form to discuss the details of your upcoming visit. If you do not fill out the pre-registration form then your tour will not be booked! Please fill out the pre-registration form!
Program Activities
Small groups (20 students or less) can have a themed tour that includes a tour related craft for an extra $1 per student to cover the cost of supplies.
Themes include:
Hop into History with the Coleman Frog - Learn all about the museum's BIGGEST friend, the famous Coleman Frog.
History Rocks - Learn about the artefacts in our Native exhibit and about petroglyphs.
Face to Face with History - Learn about the portraits in our “Fredericton Notables” gallery and a little about A. G. Hoit (1808-1856).
The Boss and his Trains – Learn about Boss Gibson and his trains.
If you a Girl Guide or Boy Scout group then we can customize tours and activities for badge requirements. Please let us know what you need.
Movies
We can include the museum 18 minute DVD movie on the history of Central New Brunswick. The DVD is recommended for grade 5 and up and is bilingual.
For younger groups we can play a cartoon video that leads into a short discussion about museum etiquette. We also have a short video about the Coleman Frog that can be played to groups of any age!
Teacher Outlines (Education Kits)
The York Sunbury Museum has created Teacher Outlines for in-class activities surrounding the Museum exhibits and curriculum requirements. There are teacher outlines for the Elementary Level and the Middle School Level.
Self-Guided Tours
Self-guided tours are available for groups. You must still fill out the pre-registration form. Chaperones are required for all groups. Self-guided elementary and middle school groups must have one adult for every five students.
Teacher Guided Tours
Teachers wishing to lead independent tours with their students must first visit the Museum to become acquainted with the collection, exhibits and touring procedures. You must still fill out the pre-registration form. Chaperones are required for all groups.
Specialized Programming for University Groups
The Museum offers specialized programming for University classes to compliment curriculum. Please fill out the pre-registration form and we'll be in touch to discuss what options are available.
Accessibility
The second floor of the Museum is not wheelchair accessible. Some of the Museum's exhibitions are on the main floor as well as the restrooms.
Lunch at the Museum
You may bring a bag lunch. Please plan ahead so we can reserve space for your group. Some groups take advantage of the Officer’s Square grounds and plan a picnic in front of the Museum.
How Should We Prepare for the Visit?
Follow these important steps for a successful visit.
Directions
We are located on Queen Street right in Officer’s Square! There is bus parking in behind the Museum. Follow Queen Street, turn right on to Carleton Street and follow the street all the way around the Fredericton Library. The bus parking spaces are at the far end of the parking lot on the left hand side.
Cancelling a Tour
Please contact the Museum as soon as you know you need to cancel your visit. You will be invoiced if your group does not show up for a scheduled tour.
